The lawn stops being the worst part of winter
A real lawn on clay spends a good stretch of the year as a bog, and it never recovers from the same three routes being walked across it. Artificial grass does not care about any of that. It drains, it rinses, and the strip along the fence stays green instead of turning into a bald run.

- Works in shade where real turf thins out and gives up, under trees and north-facing.

The build-up
Bad astroturf is nearly always a bad base
The grass itself is a roll off a van. What separates a lawn that still looks right in five years from one that ripples in eighteen months is entirely underneath it.
Stone base
Type 1 compacted in layers so water moves away underneath and the walked routes do not settle into dips.
Screeded sand
Sharp sand screeded off level and true. This is the layer you can see the results of from the patio door.
Fit and dress
Pile running one way throughout, joints glued and hidden, edges pinned or fixed to timber, then brushed through with kiln-dried sand.
Edges and transitions
Where it meets everything else is where it gives itself away
A lawn that lifts along a fence or leaves a gap against the paving is the giveaway that the edges were an afterthought. Grass gets fixed to a solid line every time — a paved edge, a timber batten or a gravel margin — so nothing curls and nothing shows a cut edge.
- Against paving, run tight to the flag edge with no lip to catch a foot.
- Against fencing, finished into a gravel margin so the run stays clean.
- Around beds and trees, cut in rather than folded and hoped for.
Grass and paving as one job
Lay the lawn and the patio together and the join stops being a compromise.
Levels have to line up, the edge detail has to be decided before either goes down, and the drainage has to work across both. Two trades on two visits is how you end up with a step where you wanted a seam.
